Over the last few years, the study of synesthesia has gained increased importance in the scientific community. In this article, we present some essential aspects of synesthesia. After describing this phenomenon, we discuss how it can be measured in an objective way, along with its developmental origins. Then, based on data from various articles, we try to determine whether the acquisition of synesthetic associations ever ends, and if non-synesthete people can learn to become synesthetes. We also discuss the possible cognitive benefits of synesthesia and how the study of this phenomenon contributes to the more general understanding of cognition.
