French validation of the Multidimensional fatalism measure by Esparza et al. (2015)
A growing body of psychological research studies fatalism as a determinant of behavior in different contexts. All measures of this construct have been developed in English, which is not accessible to the French-speaking population. The present study performs the French validation of Esparza, Wiebe, and Quinones’ (2015) Multidimensional fatalism measure, the most recent measure of fatalism. After translation and reverse-translation of the original scale, a validation study was conducted on a sample of 1630 francophones participants from Europe and Africa. The factor analysis confirmed the initial 5-factors structure of the scale, with satisfactory convergent, discriminant and predictive validity indices. Thus, the French version of the multidimensional fatalism measure presents satisfactory psychometric properties and can be used to measure fatalistic beliefs in a French-speaking population.
